Our first meet against Morton High School and Mt. Carmel was a great success. Our Varsity team took first place at the meet and our Frosh-Soph team took second to Morton by only 2 points. (Originally it was reported that Morton beat us by 7 points at the Frosh-Soph level, but we discovered two scoring errors.) Complete results from the meet are attached. If you ever see a mistake in the results, please email me so that I can correct it.
At this point, it is worth mentioning that our season record does not matter for the most part. If we win the conference championship meet, we are conference champions. If we win the sectional meet, we are sectional champions. If we win the state meet, we are state champions regardless of performance in regular season meets. Therefore, we will often put together lineups to include as many athletes as possible. That is what we did with this first meet. We do however take some meets more seriously during the season as they help to measure our progress as a team.
Meet with Sandburg and Downers Grove South at Downers Grove South
After having to cancel our meet on Tuesday, we were extremely lucky to be invited to a meet at Downers Grove South this Friday. The bus for this meet will leave at 2:45 and the meet will begin at 5:00. The lineup for the meet will be announced later this week. We may be limited on entries into this meet, but we will try to bring as many athletes as possible. Directions to Downers Grove South can be found below.
Athletes that are not participating in this meet will have practice at the normal time.
State Meet Plans
During the season, I will often encourage athletes to come to a meet to support their team even if they are not competing. The three meets where I especially do this are the Downers Grove South meet outdoors, the Sectional Meet, and the State Meet. What I would like athletes to try to do now is to plan to be at the State Meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston regardless of whether or not they are travelling with the team. The State Meet is held on Saturday, May 29th, which is Memorial Day Weekend. A large number of our athletes, alumni, parents, and fans fill out the “Neuqua Section” in the stands which lines up with the finish line. Many young athletes travelled down to the meet last year and saw what an amazing meet it was. This year we would like our section to be bigger than ever so make plans now before your schedule fills up!
Spring Break Plans
I have received many questions about Spring Break. We expect our athletes to be present over spring break for practice. (This is no different than the other teams that expect attendance during the breaks. For instance, Basketball athletes cannot go away for Winter Break.) That being said, we understand that some athletes that are new to our team may already have family plans. We will take that into consideration. However, if our Varsity athletes miss more than three practices over Spring Break, we will most likely hold them out of the meet following spring break. This is a minor penalty for missing three or more days of practice. Also, it is to an athlete’s advantage to be a practice over Spring Break. We have had many athletes lose their spot after returning from Spring Break since the rest of the team made progress in their absence.
